Inspiring NAIDOC Week Profile – Kedea Atherton

Kedea is our Indigenous Employment Executive for QLD and NT regions. She is a proud Papua New Guinea, Darumbal and Wakka Wakka woman with strong ties to culture and community. Kedea has been with AccorHotels for 2 years and is very passionate about the work she does.

This is Kedea’s story:

Who’s your mob (family) and where are they from?

I proudly identify as being Papua New Guinea from my father’s side and Aboriginal from my mother’s side. My mother’s tribe is Darumbal from Rockhampton as well as Wakka Wakka from Cherbourg where her mother was.

Who comes to mind when you hear ‘because of her we can’ – and why?

Most definitely my mother. She is my rock! She didn’t have an easy life growing up however she didn’t let that affect her in any way, shape or form. She used her trials and tribulations to become the strong woman she is today. I admire her for her strength, her love and her courage. I hope as I grow older I can become at least half the woman she is.

Who are you outside of your role as Indigenous Employment Specialist with AccorHotels?

Outside of work, I am a big/little sister to 6 brothers, I am a rugby league player, a daughter to amazing parents, and a mother figure to 3 beautiful little children. Most of all I am a family person, I love my family dearly, very family orientated – it’s what keeps me going on the daily.

How are you celebrating NAIDOC Week this year?

AccorHotels are heavily involved across the country when it comes to NAIDOC week, this year I have had the privilege of flying to Sydney and participating in the NAIDOC Women’s Conference. To me this is such a great opportunity to soak up as much as I can physically, mentally and emotionally from powerful indigenous women from all over.

Any inspiring and motivating moto’s or quotes that you live by?

Be yourself; everyone else is taken.

Is AccorHotels an Equal Opportunity Employer?

At AccorHotels, we believe that if we are going to create something truly great we need to look at things a bit differently. That’s why we’re dedicated to achieving a diverse workforce through our commitment to Reconciliation, women in leadership and providing opportunities for mature age workers.

What kind of training and development does AccorHotels offer?

AccorHotels has it’s very own Registered Training Organisation ‘Academie AccorHotels’ which has over 20 campuses globally and supports the business through building the capability of our talent. AccorHotels places an extremely high priority on the development of our employees, and is committed to ensuring that every individual has access to broaden their skills, knowledge and understanding.

How often do our Graduate programs run?

Intakes for the AccorHotels Executive Leadership Program and Graduate Program occur once a year. Applications for AELP open in April each year and applications for GMT open in November.

Does AccorHotels have a Graduate Program?
